Cyril J. Law Jr.

Cardinal Bishop John Baptist Wu granted his permission to celebrate the Indult Tridentine Latin Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal in the diocese of Hong Kong, on a one-year trial basis. The first Mass was celebrated on 21/4 2001, Sabbato in Albis, at the Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School Chapel. The celebrant was Fr. Mengarini PIME. The Mass will be celebrated on a bi-weekly basis.

This came about as a result of an appeal launched more than a year ago, and several meetings were held between some members of the faithful and two designated prelates discussing the details and relevant arrangements.

The first Tridentine Mass since 1970 was attended by around 60 faithful, including 5 priests and 4 nuns. Old and young alike showed their utmost enthusiasm and piety towards the Mass. We witnessed how the elder generation was thrilled to participate in the singing and giving responses.

The first Mass was a High Mass accompanied with incense and magnificent music. The Victimae Paschaeli Laudes sequence was sung as it was within the Octave of Easter. The recessional hymn was Christus Vincit, in which we invoked the Lord to bless our Holy Father, our Bishop and all the clergy and faithful. A triumph of God indeed!

After Mass we had some light refreshment and we look forward to a satisfactory growth of this little yet unique community in the Pearl of the Orient.

Special thanks should be given to the Una Voce organization and the Coalition in support of Ecclesia Dei, for their excellent and abundant resources posed on the Internet, which served as invaluable reference for our petition. I would like to personally thank various coordinators of the Una Voce group for their referral of correspondence for me to seek advice and support. Deo gratias!
