Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest
The Institute of Christ the King is a society of apostolic life approved by Rome and
canonically erected in 1990. Its goal is the glory of God and the sanctification of
priests in the service of the Church and souls through doctrinal and spiritual formation.
At the urging of members of the priestly fraternity Opus Sacerdotale, an association of
conservative French priests founded in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, Msgr.
Gilles Wach formed a society of apostolic life which would guarantee a solid and
traditional formation for priestly vocations. This institute was approved in Rome
and canonically erected under the auspices of the Congregation of Religious in 1990.
Subsequently Msgr. Wach received permission from the Commission Ecclesia Dei to use the
liturgical books according to the Vatican Typical Edition of 1962 . The Institute of
Christ the King uses the Traditional Latin Mass exclusively.
- The Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest is a missionary oriented institute,
to spread the reign of Christ the King into all aspects of human life and culture.
- It has as its primary patroness Our Lady under title of the Immaculate Conception.
Secondary patrons are St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.
- The motto of the Institute of Christ the King is Veritatem facientes in caritate, furthering
truth in charity.
- The international seminary for the Institute of Christ the King, located in the historic
Villa Martelli at Gricigliano, nestled in the Tuscan Hill just a few miles outside
Florence, Italy, is intended to prepare future priests in a Roman spirit: priests destined
for parish ministries, teaching, spiritual direction, and preaching retreats, who promote
all human and supernatural values of Christian civilization in such a way that is
harmonious with true culture and Christianity.

- For this reason, and enjoying the right confirmed by the Holy Father, Pope John-Paul II,
in his Motu proprio of 2 July 1988, the liturgical books used in the seminary and the
Institute are those according to the Vatican Typical Edition of 1962.
- Clerical formation is given according to the spirit in which the Church intends to form
her priests. This spirit is that of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself which has been handed
down over the centuries, and which is expressed in Tradition, the decrees of the Popes,
the Canons of the Church and the declarations of the Councils.
- Tomorrow our world will need well trained priests.
- The formation of Soldiers of Christ, who will soon go into action, is vital for the
Church, for souls, and the world.
