In his 1988 Apostolic Letter, Ecclesia Dei, the late Pope John Paul II called for "wide and generous application" of the permission to use of the Roman Missal of 1962. This same pope convened World Youth Day 2005. It is sad that His Holiness did not live to see this fruit of such wide and generous application of the Rite of 1962 at this World Youth Day.
